Opened in 1921, the Hotel Charlotte is a California Gold Rush era property listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Charlotte DeFerrari, the hotel’s namesake and builder, was born in Genoa, Italy in 1881. Her family migrated to the California gold fields when Charlotte was sixteen. During this era, the Groveland area went from boom to bust and back again. The Gold Rush and then the San Francisco Hetch Hetchy water project brought prosperity and notoriety to the Groveland and Big Oak Flat settlements.
Shortly after arriving in Groveland, Charlotte’s father was killed in a mining accident at Hardin Flat, and young Charlotte was left as the sole provider to her younger siblings and mother. Young, single, and ambitious, she built the hotel on the site of an old livery stable, and in 1921, she purchased the Gem Saloon, next door, annexing it to the Hotel Charlotte as a restaurant. Charlotte DeFerrari became a legend in her own time, and it is rumored that she still roams the halls of her hotel.

Deborah and Kevin stumbled upon their property in 2001. Its beautiful meadow, wildlife, and red tail hawks instantly won their hearts. They named it Red Tail Ranch and built the main house in 2004. Soon after, they acquired horses, built a barn, and later added chickens to the mix. Over the years, friends and family kept mentioning that the property’s uniqueness, and its proximity to Yosemite, would be a great location for a Bed & Breakfast.
Fast forward to 2013 – That’s when Deborah spawned her new career as an Innkeeper. In 2017 two additional rooms were added to the grounds. Four rooms, allows Deborah and Kevin the pleasure to offer one-on-one attention to all their guests.
In spring and summer, the two are immersed in their careers – Kevin owns a forestry company. But when they are not working, or hosting visitors from around the world, they are riding horses, kayaking, or enjoying a stay-cation at Red Tail Ranch.
